MIMMO PALLADINO

Mimmo Paladino (Paduli, 18 December 1948). It is among the main exponents of the Transavanguardia, a movement founded by Achille Bonito Oliva in 1980 that identifies a return to painting, after the various conceptual currents that developed in the seventies. He created archaic reminiscences works, accentuated by the use of Greco-Roman, Etruscan and Paleo-Christian symbols and ancient techniques such as encaustic and mosaic. In 1970 he made his debut with collages inspired by mythological themes; the adoption of oil painting in 1978 coincides with a cycle of polymaterial canvases, where abstract figuration is combined with found objects. In 1979 he held two solo exhibitions in New York . Influenced by primitive and tribal art, from the early 1980s he also created sculptures, totemic figures in bronze, wood or limestone, and numerous installations. In 1980 he participated in his first Venice Biennale. In 1985 the Lenbachhaus in Munich organized his first retrospective exhibition in a public space. In 1988 he was invited with a personal room to the Venice Biennale. In 1991 he took part in a large exhibition in Prague for the inauguration of the Royal Castle. In 1994 he was the first Italian contemporary artist to hold an exhibition in China, at the National Gallery of Fine Arts in Beijing. In 1995 Naples dedicates a large exhibition to him in three prestigious public spaces. In 1999 a large exhibition was organized in London where the great cycle of the Sleepers was exhibited. In the same year, the Royal Academy of London awarded him the title of Honorary Member. In 2002 The Center for Contemporary Art Luigi Pecci dedicated to him, by Bruno Cora, the most comprehensive retrospective exhibition organized by an Italian museum. Performs the doors for the Padre Pio’s church realizated by Renzo Piano. In 2006 sets out a new edition of Don Quixote and realized an artist’s book with poems by Giuseppe Conte, inspired by the famous “knight errant” (Editalia). The film, at the invitation of director Marco Muller, will be presented in September, with great success at the Venice Film Festival. Carries out the intervention of Vinci in the square, a square for Leonardo, for the reconfiguration of the entrance of the new Leonardo Museum. He exhibited at galleries Cardi and Christian Stein, Milan and the Waddington Galleries in London. In 2007 make two sets for the play Oedipus Rex and Cavalleria Rusticana at the Teatro Regio in Turin. In 2008 he was entrusted with the construction of 4 tarpaulins to cover the scaffolding of the restoration work on the bell tower of the Cathedral of Modena. ENZO CUCCHI

Enzo Cucchi (Morro d’Alba, 14 November 1950). After debuts in the conceptual field, he arrived at figuration, becoming one of the main exponents of the historical core of the Transavantgarde. In works on canvas, accompanied by numerous drawings and often published by poetic texts written by himself, he reappropriates, with a visionary gaze, myth, art history and literature. It creates compositions of great symbolic intensity, in which the world is represented as a battleground between two opposing principles. After great compositions with the use of charcoal and collage, he experimented with the use of different materials, including earth, burnt wood, neon tubes and iron. The “Vitebsk-Harar” series is dedicated to Rimbaud and K.S Malevic. At the same time, it embraces an almost Caravaggian use of light, which effects the spatial depth. He also made some sculptures and the decoration of the chapel of Monte Tamaro near Lugano. He is considered to be one of the most important visionary artists of the Transavantgarde movement and has become, from the 1980s, of international importance. Towards the end of the 1970s the artist, after having moved to Rome and having momentarily abandoned his poetry, meets artists Francesco Clemente and Sandro Chia with whom he establishes an intellectual and dialectical exchange. Several prestigious museums dedicate personal exhibitions to Enzo Cucchi, among which: Kunsthaus, Zurigo (1982 & 1998), Caja de Pensiones, Madrid (1985), Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York and Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (1986), Lenbachhaus, Monoco (1987), Wiener Secession, Vienna (1988), Museo Luigi Pecci, Prato (1989), Galleria Civica, Modena (1990), Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Fundaciò Joan Mirò, Barcelona and Carrè d’Art, Nîmes (1991), Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, Roma (1998) and Museum of Art, Tel Aviv (2001). In Monte Tamaro (Canton Ticino), Swizerland he fulfilled the realization of the interior decoration and the main altar of a church designed by the well known architect Mario Botta. Enzo Cucchi has displayed his works in numerous personal exhibitions and has taken part in collective exhibitions in many important Italian and foreign venues; for example, Kunsthalle, Basilea, Solomon R. Guggenheim, New York, Tate Gallery, London, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris,Castello di Rivoli, Rivoli (Torino), Palazzo Reale, Milano, Serzon Museum of Art, Tokyo, French Accademy in Rome (Villa Medici), the Musèe d’Art Moderne de Saint-Etienne Metropole. Furthermore, he has participated in some of the most significative contemporary art expositions at international levels among which La Biennale Internazionale d’Arte, Venice, Documenta, Kassel, and Quadriennale d’Arte, Rome. His works can be found in important museum collections worldwide or in prestigious national and international private collections. In 2007 the Museo Correr, Venice celebrated the works of Enzo Cucchi by dedicating to him a monographic exhibition.

Ferdinando Scianna was born in Bagheria, is one of the best known Italian photographers. Sicilian by origin, Milanese by adoption, photojournalist, his work was born with the photographic history of popular traditions in which the protagonists are people and their way of being society: “I photographed religious holidays because they were the manifestation of the way to be of the people “says Scianna.

In 1963 he met Leonardo Sciascia with whom he published numerous books; the first is “Religious festivals in Sicily”, with which he won the Nadar prize in 1966. He moved to Milan where he has been working for the weekly L’Europeo as a photojournalist since 1967, special correspondent, then correspondent from Paris, where he lives for ten years. Since 1987 he has alternated fashion photography and advertising with international success. Among his most important books: Les Siciliens (Denoel), 1977 with texts by Domenique Fernandez and Leonardo Sciascia; Kami, Milan 1988; The forms of chaos, Udine 1988; Leonardo Sciascia, Milan 1989; Marpessa, Milan 1993; Elsewhere, fashion reportage, Milan 1995; Journey to Lourdes, Milan 1996. Sleeping, perhaps dreaming, Udine 1997.

In Paris, Scianna writes for Le Monde Diplomatique and La Quinzaine littéraire and above all knows Henri Cartier-Bresson, whose works influenced him from a young age. The great photographer will present him in 1982 as the first Italian in the prestigious Magnum agency, of which he will become a full member in 1989. In 1984 he collaborates with Bresson and André Pieyre de Mandiargues for Henri Cartier-Bresson: portraits (Collins).

In the meantime, he befriended and collaborated with various successful writers, including Manuel Vázquez Montalbán (who wrote the introduction of Shapes of Chaos a few years later, 1989). In the eighties he also worked in high fashion and advertising, establishing himself as one of the most requested photographers. It provides an essential contribution to the success of the Dolce and Gabbana campaigns of the second half of the 1980s.

In 1995 he returned to address religious issues, publishing the book “Journey to Lourdes” and in 1999 the portraits of the famous Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges were published.

2003 sees the release of the book “Quelli di Bagheria” (part of a larger project that includes a documentary and various exhibitions), the reconstruction of the environment and atmosphere of his youth through a search in individual and collective memory. In December 2006 the 2007 calendar of the Nebrodi Park was presented, with twelve shots of the Messina actress Maria Grazia Cucinotta. With his fellow citizen Giuseppe Tornatore, on the occasion of his new film Baarìa, he published the photographic book Baaria Bagheria in 2009.
